Modern electric bikes combine a motor, battery, controller, sensors and user controls. The experience comes from how those parts work together rather than from one headline specification.

Hub motors and mid-drive systems

Hub motors sit within a wheel and can make for a straightforward, smooth riding experience. Mid-drive systems place the motor around the crank area and can make effective use of the bicycle's gearing, particularly on climbs.

Torque, cadence and assistance

Cadence sensors generally detect pedal movement, while torque sensing can respond to how strongly the rider is pushing. Neither is automatically better for every rider; the useful question is how naturally the assistance fits the journey.

Displays and controls

Good controls should make assistance easy to understand without distracting from riding. Look for clear information about battery state, assistance level and relevant ride data.

Technology should serve the journey
